Four 2014 Grants Brings Total Contribution to $280,000

Thanks to your support, we are proud to work with four amazing partners in Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal. See below for details on how your donations are changing lives!

Two Wheel View

SHLF is proud to continue our partnership with Calgary's Two Wheel View (TWV).

Last year's your support allowed this awesome organization to expand its bicycle education and expedition programs to youth in Morley,  part of the Stoney Nation located outside of Calgary. This funding allowed to program to work with youth that would not have otherwise had the opportunity to access these types of programs.

The pilot programme was received extremely well, with the community asking for more programmes for more kids.  More than just a toy, the bikes earned by the youth are helping them get to school, part-time jobs or other after school sports and activities, as well as encouraging physical activity.

The Full Cycle program includes the Earn-a-Bike program, bike shop, local bike trips, extended bike trips and environmental stewardhips projects.

"I get to learn from really cool leaders, hang out with my best friend and my new bike will help me get to other activities, like soccer at the park with my friends."

We expect over 30 youth to participate in the Bike Club program this year, all made possible through SHLF supporters.

Streetfront

For the 6th year in a row, SHLF is proud to be the key funder in support of East Vancouver's Streetfront.

Their incredible life-changing work continues, including their unique sports and academic program that empowers teenagers through school days spent half in the classroom and half doing sports.

This program continues to achieve incredible results including over 100 kids completing marathons and a 86% graduation rate.

This year's goals have grown to include taking 18 youth to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania!

As their only funding partner, your support allows these deserving youth to participate in their keystone marathon program, 3 camping trips, over a dozen adventure outings including hiking, kayaking, snoeshowing and more, running shoes, entry fees and fees to participate in mainstream sports teams.

Congratulations Streetfront. We are proud of all that you do!

Take a Hike

For the 6th year in a row, SHLF is proud to partner with Take a Hike in Vancouver.

Before coming to Take a Hike, the majority of the youth involved in this alternative school program have never experienced the outdoors or taken part in organized sport. Take a Hike encourages and motivates at-risk youth to connect with nature and improve their physical health through activity. The physical education program includes traditional activities such as running and team sports as well as unique outdoor endeavors such as slacklining, rock climbing and kayaking.

Your support funds Fall Expeditions for all students involved in the Mainland Vancouver program. Thanks to your support, every student will attend a Fall expedition such as a multi- day hiking, kayaking or canoeing adventure. Reports from students repeatedly tell us about how life-changing these experiences are - camping, seeing the stars, testing their limits, building a fire for the very first time.

Strachan Hartley Make a Difference Fellowship

SHLF is proud to partner with McGill Athletics and offer the Strachan Hartley Make a Difference Fellowship for the first time ever this academic year.

The Make a Difference Fellowship will be offered to a returning student athlete at McGill University. Student athletes will be invited to submit a proposed project that aims to Make a Difference in the lives of youth through sports and education. The projects will be of the choosing of the student athlete and require a total time commitment of 300 hours that can be applied however they see fit (ie. full time over a summer or school break or part-time over longer periods).  Projects have no geographical limitations and can be local, Canadian or international in scope. Applications will be short-listed and reviewed by a selection panel and the winning student athlete will be provided a financial reward to apply to their project.

The objective of the Make a Difference Fellowship is to encourage talented student athletes to use their abilities and privileges to Make a Difference in the lives of youth. SHLF hopes to cultivate a spirit of giving through this award and encourages student athletes to think hard and be creative about projects they may apply.

Applicants must submit an application and report as well as sit on the selection committee for the following 3 years minimum.

We look forward to the next generation of Difference Makers and learning through their projects! Go Redmen!
