L’Athlétique d’Haïti is a youth development program that uses sports, education and nutrition to serve the disenfranchised youth of the Cité Soleil and Bel Air slums of Port-au-Prince. Today, 1,500 boys and girls participate in this after school program. They play sports, mainly soccer, for two hours each afternoon and they receive a nutritious meal at the end of the day. Using SHLF funds L’Athlétique d’Haïti was able to send the 14 to 16 year-olds to Denmark for an international tournament where they placed second! This was the first time any of the participants had ever left Haiti.
Due to the recent earthquake L’Athlétique d’Haïti is functioning in a different capacity while refugee families reside on their site. In the long term L’Athlétique d’Haïti would like to expand their program, increase female participation and develop staff training. Presently however, their focus is on reconstruction and they are working to raise $1 million for reconstruction materials, staff, equipment and food. To lend our support the Strachan Hartley Legacy Foundation is kicking-off a campaign to help L’Athlétique d’Haïti rebuild their perimeter wall. This wall is important for the security, safety and proper functioning of the L’Athlétique d’Haïti program and its participants.
