In partnership with Westhaven and Loyola Community Centres, SHLF is proud to have presented the first ever NDG Commmunity Youth Basketball League Tournament March 12-13 in Montreal!
Since September 2010, SHLF has been partnering with the Westhaven and Loyola Community Centres to provide an after-school basketball league for youth in the West End of Notre-Dame-de Grace area, occupied largely by low-income, economically disadvantaged, single-parent families and seniors.
Prior to the initiation of the programme, these youth did not have access to any organized sports in their own neighbourhood. Structured participation in sport was reserved for those who are able to travel and who could afford to pay for it.
SHLF established a partnership with Westhaven and Loyola Community Centres to address a growing interest in sport by the youth and parents involved in their after-school programmes, and to provide them with an alternative to being in the streets. The Community Centres provide a range of services to the whole community from small children to seniors, but were previously unable to provide any sports besides casual pick-up.
Thanks to SHLF and its supporters, kids aged 8-12 and teens 13+ practice 2-3 times a week with committed and trained coaches and play one game a week in a community league sponsored by SHLF. In addition the teens participate in referee clinics and are trained to officiate games within the league and beyond. The league focuses on participation, skill development and commitment and less on competiveness.
The "Ball til you Fall' tournament featured over 100 youth on 3 'Kid' and 4 'Teen' teams from the neighbourhood and was a great success all around!
Congratulations to all participants and keep up the great work!
